1. The Leaning Tower of Niles

The Leaning Tower of Niles, a replica of Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa in the beautiful 22-acre Ilgiar Park, is a national landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tower was constructed by local businessman Robert Ilg between 1931 and 1934, 600 years after the original, to conceal the tank that supplies water to the two large pools to preserve the park’s beauty.

Standing 94 feet tall, measuring 28 feet in diameter, and leaning 7.4 feet, the tower is half the size of the original tower in Nile’s sister city, Pisa. A plaza surrounds the tower with four fountains, a 30-foot reflecting pool, and scenic gardens. The tower clock chimes every 15 minutes, and each day the historic bells ring on the hour at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m., playing old favorite melodies. The Leaning Tower of Niles is at 6300 W. Touhy Avenue.

2. Bunker Hill

The astonishingly beautiful Bunker Hill riverside preserve covers a natural area of open savanna, oak woodlands, floodplain forest, and the Sidney Yates Flatwoods, all teeming with wildlife. It’s a popular hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and birding spot with seven sheltered picnic groves in picturesque surroundings.

A section of the extensive North Branch Trail System cuts through the area carpeted with wildflowers and blooming grasses in the summer season. The slow-running North Branch of the Chicago River is ideal for paddling to observe waterbirds, including geese, ducks, and herons, and catch glimpses of other bird species and wildlife along the shores.
