When most drivers think of transmission repair, they imagine bills of thousands of dollars and days without their car. Most of the time this isn’t the case. If your car has its regular service schedule, our technicians will be able to prevent the most serious problems. Small issues can still happen, and minor repairs may still have to be made. These are some of the signs that you need to visit your Chevy dealer.

Check Engine Light

The check engine light covers a wide variety of potential problems. Sensors are attached to all the important components in your car. They monitor the component they’re attached to for any signs of trouble. The slightest fluctuation in power or sign that the component isn’t performing as it should, causes the sensor to send a signal to your computer, and the check engine light will come on.

This early warning is particularly important for any problem with the transmission. There are hundreds of different parts in the transmission, and a single part that fails or isn’t working correctly can be easily missed. A small issue can easily become a large and costly problem if it isn’t repaired timeously. The check engine light generates a code, and our technicians can use this code to diagnose and repair the problem.

Noises When You’re in Neutral

When your transmission is in neutral, your transmission isn’t in gear. You can test for a potential transmission problem by starting your engine and shifting the transmission into neutral. A transmission that’s working correctly shouldn’t make any noise. If you hear strange noises like bumping or shaking, this means there’s a problem with your transmission.

These sounds are usually a sign of low or old transmission fluid. Transmission fluid lubricates all the parts of the transmission, and it also helps to prevent friction damage between various components. A lack of transmission fluid will mean various parts “bump” against each other due to the lack of a friction barrier. Old transmission fluid is less effective at preventing friction. Our technicians will examine your transmission and find the cause of the problem.

Hesitation in Shifting Gears

When you shift gears, they should respond immediately. Some transmission problems start with a slight hesitation between when the gear is shifted and when it’s applied. If this problem continues, your transmission will eventually start to shake when it shifts gear. Manual transmissions make harsher clunking and grinding sounds.

A hesitation in shifting gears can be due to low transmission fluid, as the fluid provides the hydraulic power to make gear shifting easier. The clunking sound can be from a lack of lubrication. There could also be other deeper issues. We will investigate, and our technicians will find and repair the problem.
