Good car brakes can mean the difference between a near-miss and a serious accident. They are essential for safety, but as with any mechanical component, they will eventually wear out. As your Chevy dealer, we can replace them for you. These are some of the signs to watch for that you may need a brake repair.

Vibrating Brake Pedal

Vibrations from the brake pedal are caused by worn or damaged rotors. The rotors are the circular discs that connect to each wheel. When you brake, a signal is sent via the master brake cylinder to the brake pads to squeeze tight against the rotors and to stop your car. Due to the friction caused by this, your rotors do sustain wear, and they will thin out over time and warp.

Excessive braking, especially at high speed, can also cause the rotors to warp. We will need to replace warped rotors, and possibly the brake pads too depending on their condition.

Screeching When Brake Pads Have Been Replaced

Screeching is usually a sign of brake pads that are wearing out, and it is a warning that they need to be changed. If the pads have been replaced, and the screeching persists, this is a sign that the rotors have been damaged. This is something that you can check by looking through the wheel spokes at the circular rotor discs.

Rotor discs that have blue marks or a dark ring on them have been damaged by excessive braking when you are traveling fast. This type of braking causes friction to burn the rotors. We can replace the rotors, and if we install brake pads we always check the rotors for any sign of damage first so we can let you know.

Sensitive or Insensitive Brakes

Sensitive brakes can cause your car to stop at the slightest touch of the brake pedal. This is a sign that either your rotors have uneven wear, or that you may have too much brake fluid in the system. When the brake fluid reservoir is too full, the heat from the system can cause the fluid to expand and push the caliper pistons out. This will make your brakes far more responsive than they should be.

If you have to floor your brake pedal to stop your car, your brakes are insensitive. There are several possible reasons for this, including low brake fluid, an air blockage in the brake fluid, or your brake pads may be too thin. It is also possible that there may be a problem with your car’s hydraulic system. Our service technicians will investigate, and we will fix the brake problem.
