Niles Veteran’s Memorial Park

You need to visit the waterfall at Nile’s Veteran’s Memorial Park. You can safely leave your Chevrolet Malibu in the Waterfall Parking (it’s free!), located at 7021 W. Touhy Ave, then stroll through the park until you reach the waterfall on the southwest corner of Milwaukee and Touhy Ave. During the warm months, you can also get your picture with a lifesize statue of Abe Lincoln on his blue couch. Talk about a unique photo opportunity.

This park is open to the public seven days a week, from dawn until dusk, and there is no charge to enter the park. Be sure to bring a picnic lunch because you can make a full day out of all the exciting things the park has to offer.

Leaning Tower of Niles

Once you’ve visited Honest Abe and the memorial waterfall, follow the sound of the bells to the Leaning Tower of Niles. This replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is half the size of its Italian namesake. You can find this one-of-a-kind landmark at 6300 W. Touhy Ave. The bells chime every 15 minutes throughout the day, as well as playing various melodies at 9 am, 12 pm, 3 pm, and 6 pm. Can you name all the tunes?

The Grove at Glenview Park

This unique slice of history, located at 1421 Milwaukee Ave, boasts 150 acres of historic land. There are plenty of hiking trails to traverse, as well as a large outdoor history and nature museum. Here, you can visit a family of turtles in their natural habitat and see wetland pools and Savanna landscapes alike.

You can also have the opportunity to learn more about the Native tribes that lived on the land far before the first European settlers came along. While you’re here, make sure you stop in and visit the Blacksmith shop and the Kennicott house to see original relics from the first people to set foot in Glenview.

The Noble-Seymour-Crippen House

Visit the Norwood Park Historical Society, built in 1833. Located at 5624 N. Newark Ave, this historical landmark is also home to a museum, local archives, and several rotating exhibits and hosts its own meeting space. While you can walk the grounds whenever you wish, be sure to call ahead for a reservation to book time at this unique museum.
